Cleaning & Maintaining Modwood Fencing

If it's the time of the year when fence cleaning becomes a priority, then today's blog post is for you. Especially if you have Modwood fencing. Even if you do not have Modwood fencing yet, but you are debating whether you should have one, then below are some tips you can put behind your ears for the future reference. Therefore, what should you know about the maintenance and cleaning of Modwood fencing?

Firstly, for the ones who do not know what Modwood fencing is, let's have a quick reminder. Modwood is made in Melbourne, Australia. It is made out of a mixture of ground sustainable wood waste and plastic, making it environmentally friendly material - Modwood uses recycled plastic milk bottles. Additionally, it doesn't contain formaldehydes.

For the ones who do not know what formaldehyde is, here's a quick recap. Formaldehyde is a colourless and strong-smelling gas. It is used in many building materials and household commodities. Some of the products, as such, are pressed-wood products. For example, fibreboards.

Why is it a good thing that Modwood material doesn't contain formaldehyde? Exposure to formaldehyde has been shown to cause cancer (in laboratory test animals). Also, exposure to relatively high quantities of formaldehyde in medical and occupational settings has been associated with some types of cancer in people.

Be aware of:

1. It is not recommended to use high-pressure cleaners on Modwood materials, including Modwood fencing.
2. Use strong cleaning chemicals with great caution.
3. Don't forget the expansion joints. They may need periodic cleaning as well.

Recommendations:

1. Clean the fence regularly.
2. You can use “Sugar soap” mixed with water to clean Modwood material. Be careful not to scratch it though when using yard broom to clean Modwood.
3. When removing oil-based stains (more difficult), you may use water-diluted Deck Protect Composite Clean or So Safe deck cleaning products.
4. Deck Protect Composite Strip may be helpful when removing graffiti paint from Modwood material.
5. Any debris that will accumulate between Modwood fencing gaps between the boards has to be removed.
